Ex-VISA VP says PayPal is currently processing $1,571 worth of transactions per second in 17 different currencies on about 4,000 servers running Red Hat Linux and he’s impressed.

Scott Thompson, former VP of Technology for VISA and currently Chief Technology officer of eBay’s Paypal processing company, was used to the “big iron” of VISA’s global payment processing operation. When he first arrived at Paypal in 2005, he was curious about how Paypal could handle large volumes of transactions on a Linux grid powered by thousands of Linux servers.
